Let the destination wedding planning festivities begin. Over the next 415 days—yes that’s how many days until JJ and I tie the knot—I’m sharing the ins and outs of planning a destination wedding. I’m super excited to team up with fellow Iowa blogger and newly engaged gal, Katelyn of the blog Katalina Girl who is getting married just a few short months before me in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I’m thrilled to be able to go through this planning process with her and work together to figure out how to plan a wedding in Mexico. Even though we’re getting married in different cities in Mexico, a lot of things are the same so having her has already turned out to be such a friendly blessing.
We’re teaming up to showcase a monthly (possibly bi-monthly) blog post(s) to share everything from planning tools, invites, engagement photos, bridal shower, bachelorette party, venue, how to plan a wedding remotely, bridesmaids, groomsmen, welcome bags, honeymoons, our favorite Etsy shops and so much more. Basically we’re giving you the 411 about our weddings—the good, the bad, the happy, and the crappy. We’re here to dish about this awesome planning process and offer our readers a bit of help along the way. If there’s anything in particular you’d like to know, please shoot us an email and we’d love to work it into a post!
Let’s get started! Today we’re chatting the basics of our wedding plans thus far and the tools we’re using to help make this process a bit easier. Drum roll please…
How did you meet?
JJ and I met about 3 years ago. I was a waitress at a local bar & grille. We had a mutual friend that introduced us and from that point on, he always seemed to show up on the shift I just so happened to be working! *How Ironic.* His story might vary a little bit from mine – but we can both agree that after we started getting to know each other more and more, we become inseparable. The rest is history
How did he propose?
If anyone knows JJ and I well, know that we have a desire to travel. Anywhere and Everywhere. We planned a trip down to Riviera Maya, Mexico for a week long vacation last November. On one of the last nights of the trip – he planned to have one of the gentlemen we had met on the trip record the whole proposal.
He told me that he wanted a picture by the fountain. Little did I know what was about to happen. He gets down on one knee and I finally realize that there wasn’t going to be a picture. The love of my life proposed and it was one of the greatest moments of my whole life.
SIDE NOTE: After we had finished celebrating with various friends we had met on the trip, we finally had a chance to look at the video later that night. To our dismay – the proposal was not recorded (on accident of course.) At the time, it was very disappointing but in the end it was the experience that I will always remember! There will always be a video engrained in my mind – and that is all I need 🙂
My Advice – No proposal is going to be perfect. The two of you make it perfect. There is a lot of pressure riding on the “perfect” engagement, but in reality its all about love at the end of the day.
Our wedding is going to take place on June 18th, 2016.
Riviera Maya, Mexico is where we will get married. It has a lot of meaning to the both of us – so we decided to take the leap and have a destination wedding.
We will get married in the same hotel we got engaged – Gran Bahia Principe Tulum Resort. We were so impressed with the food/service/accommodations that we can’t think of any other place we would rather be to exchange vows.
Did you hire a wedding planner?:
Details are being ironed out at the moment. I am definitely wanting a planner to help with decorations/decor. One of the main challenges I have run into with a destination wedding is that decorating is definitely not as easy as it is in the states. I would absolutely “DIY” my wedding if I could, but the $50 per suitcase is limiting me a bit.
Hiring a wedding planner is probably going to be the best scenario in the long run. Stay tuned – I will be sure to update you all wedding coordinator details in the near future.

Have you found the dress?
This is a work in progress. I have been on the lookout for something specific & unique.

The ring. Dish!
My ring – ah my ring. Rose Gold is my fav – absolute fav. I have wanted a rose gold engagement ring for as long as I can remember. JJ pulled it off beautifully. He worked with Facets by Susong on this ring. He was really impressed with how easy they were to work with and their help with designing of the rose gold ring.
If you look closely – you can see the engraving “TTMAB.” JJ and I have a saying we love to use – “To the Moon and Back.” He incorporated that into this ring – which makes it even more special.
What planning tools are you using?
I have looked and looked for the perfect wedding planner. After hours of researching I came up on this planner and haven’t looked back. Its perfect.
