Pinterest has been my top referral site for quite a long time now. I only really figured out how powerful Pinterest really can be until this last year. I would post here and there, but no real strategy behind it. Pinterest can really increase your blog traffic if you use it strategically. Pinterest is set up in a way similar to Google. Your content (or pins) will continually keep getting better and better and more valuable over time, if done correctly. Choosing The Perfect Image

If you’ve been on Pinterest for some time, you know that people pin what visually appeals to them. You want to choose an image that will stand out such as colors, composition, design, etc. Your image will be seen long before your title.

Stick to 3-5 complementary colors that match your blog or brand. When people see the same style posts over and over they will start to recognize you. They’ll therefore be curious to click through to your blog.

Image Sizing For The Best Results

Vertical pins get seen more and will attract readers to click. Go look at your feed right now – you don’t really notice the horizontal ones at all. They don’t catch your eye. Make sure your pins are vertical! Great images on Pinterest have a ratio of 2:3. The perfect pin size according to Pinterest is 768 x 1102 px. An easy way to create the perfect Pinterest image is in Canva. They have the size already formatted into their designs.

If you will be posting recipes or tutorials then long and skinny pins like this one are great for grabbing someone attention because they take up more space on your newsfeed.

Add Text To Your Image

Adding text to your images will add more value to your pin. Insert in simple text that describes what your pin is about. Use easy to read text with the blog post title on the image. I like to use 2-3 fonts for headings, subheadings and text font on your images. It is important to be consistent throughout your pins!

Add A Call To Action

Include a call to action within your text. It’s very true – if you tell someone exactly what to do, they’re more likely to do it. Even if you aren’t necessary selling something or have a free to promote, you can still add in a hook to drive people to click. Some examples – “Click this pin to start building your email list,” or “Click through to learn how to double your email list in 7 days.”

If I’m offering a freebie or opt-in within my blog post, I like to include a photo of it with a description on my Pinterest Pins. I use Canva to create my free opt-ins. I can then input them into my photos to showcase the free download a viewer would get if clicking into my blog post from the Pinterest pin. It makes it THAT much more enticing to click over if they know they will get something for free, don’t you think? An example of one of my pins with a freebie included within the picture is below:

Your Photo’s Description

Your pin’s description is going to appear directly below your image. You want to provide good information because every time someone re-pins, the description will be there as well. Your description should explain the importance of the image to those viewing it.

The description of your image should include keyword phrases. Having a great, keyword-rich description is great for SEO (search engine optimization) inside and also outside of Pinterest. This description should let people know what they can expect in your post. You don’t want to tell them everything, you want to entice them to your actual post.

When inserting a photo into your blog – Make sure to put what you want as the description of your Pinterest pin as your “Alternative Text” when inside the image details. This is what will get displayed in the description section of your Pinterest Pin. If utilizing WordPress – after uploading a photo into your blog post you can click on the image and a row of icons will appear. Click on the pencil icon. This will bring up your Image Details when in WordPress. The photo below displays an example.

Adding A Logo/URL To Your Photos

I always like adding a tiny URL to my photos, but you can do the same with a logo. This will be another way for viewers to see exactly where the Pinterest pin came from. Keep this small and in the same location for all of your photos. I typically like to keep this at the bottom of all my pins.

Follow Up On Your Pins

Once in a while, it’s a good idea to check and see what images and posts are being pinned from your blog. In my case I would check http://pinterest.com/source/uniquelywomen to view what pins have recently been pinned from my blog. It will give you a good idea where people’s interests lie and what they are sharing.

How To Easily Enable Rich Pins On Pinterest

If you have spent any time on Pinterest you know there are some pins that look completely different from the rest. These pins display where the posts are from and the title. These pins are called Rich Pins. Below you will find the step-by-step guide on how to easily enable Rich Pins on Pinterest.

Rich pins are the pins on Pinterest that have your website name displayed right under the pin image. This will direct users to the pin’s original source! You can check out Uniquely Women’s pins here to see what Rich Pins look like.

Rich Pins are great for adding additional information that can be quite handy for your business. Pinterest has created 6 different kinds of Rich Pins and the pins you choose will dictate what extra information will be displayed.

Why You Should Use Rich Pins:

One of the leading reasons for using Rich Pins, you can provide valuable information to draw people to your site when clicking on the pin. Their standard pins only display an image and a brief description. Unfortunately, the description can be altered or edited by someone pinning your content with no guarantee the description will remain accurate or even helpful. Using Rich Pins, each one from your site will provide important information that will remain the same even if someone enters their own information in the description box.

How To Work With Rich Pins For A WordPress Site:

Before you can use Rich Pins on a WordPress site you have to install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin. Once done, go to your WordPress dashboard and go to SEO then Social. Click on the Facebook tab, check the box labeled “add open graph meta data” and save your changes.

At this point, go to Rich Pins Validator. Look down at the bottom of the page, you will see a box to enter your URL for anyone of your blog posts. Once done click validate. A message will open telling you your pin has been activated, click apply now. Your site’s domain and HTML tags will pop up, click apply now.

At this point, you are done but have to wait for an email that will notify you when your Rich Pins are enabled. Pinterest has said this could take up to a week to enable but in many cases, it’s a lot shorter. It took mine a couple of hours is all.

At this point, when you prepare a post for publication, it’s important that you add a description in the meta description box which is under the Yoast SEO settings. This description will be displayed beneath of your Rich Pins. You must do this step for each one of your posts.
