Healthy Morning Cocktail

Alyssa Coleman is a holistic nutritionist and has been writing about how to love your body using nutrition.   Below, she shares her insight, plus a recipe for a healthy morning cocktail.  Bottom’s up!

Some mornings call for a mimosa or two, but the conventional cocktail can be full of liquid calories, acne causing sugar, and liver congesting alcohol. This morning cocktail is for the days when you want to unleash your inner fit girl, enjoy a mini detox, create glowing skin, burn calories, and improve your energy.

This recipe was inspired by the “Detox Elixir” in my “Free-spirited Babe’s Detox”, the ingredients in the cocktail are specifically combined to work on a few key organ systems.

The liver plays the largest role in detoxification by filtering through everything you eat, drink, put on your skin and breath in. The liver is usually working over time so it’s nice to support it by consuming some liver loving foods. Lemon and apple cider vinegar will help boost your bile production and help your liver to function optimally.

We all want glowing skin right? I’ve tried just about every cream and serum promising a Jlo glow. But the best solution I’ve found for clearing up any skin issues is to feed your skin the nutrients it needs to flourish. Apple cider vinegar is full of beneficial bacteria that will improve your intestinal flora, and prevent the overgrowth of sugar eating bacterial issues such as candida. Apple cider vinegar can also balance the skin’s pH level resulting in that coveted glow.

It is really important to kick start your digestion first thing in the morning to help you feel more energized and avoid bloating. The lemon and cayenne pepper with get your digestive juices flowing.

Apple Cider Vinegar Cocktail

Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients we’re combining:

Lemon is a natural detoxifier because the vitamin C in it helps turn toxins into a digestible material for your body to eliminate. Lemon also stimulates the liver and bile production which helps to oxygenate and detoxify the body.

Apple cider vinegar Studies show that apple cider vinegar prevents the body from accumulating fat. It also improves digestion and absorption of vital nutrients which allow your body to function optimally. Make sure to use apple cider vinegar “with the mother” to get the most acetic acid benefits.

Cayenne pepper increases your internal body temperature and kick starts your metabolism and reduces bloating.

Raw honey is full of beneficial enzymes and gut improving minerals. Having suboptimal gut function allows bacteria to grow into the small intestines causing skin issues.

I drink a mix of lemon, ACV and stevia (w water) daily for my acid reflux. Maybe when I’m not pregnant I’ll try the cayenne – and I always love raw honey!! ☺️

I can totally agree with you that this comb is amazing. I try to start the day with lemon water. I’m not a huge honey fan because I’m not a huge sweet fan but I do occasionally have local honey to help with allergies.

awesome! The honey is totally optional, if you like it without the honey then go for it! The honey can help mask some of the ACV flavour which can be a bit intense

I have tried over and over again to do this but I just can’t stomach it! I just do warm lemon water now!

I hear ya Sarah, Apple Cider Vinegar can be very pungent, have you tried it with honey? maybe add some cinnamon instead of cayenne to add some sweetness

I definitely need to try this! It’s not the first time I’ve seen it or something similar! Maybe I’ll get the ingredients together to make it today!

I used to sip warm lemon water every morning but I got away from it for a while. I found a spicy turmeric powder I use as a potent antioxidant beverage. I think I’ll try this recipe and alternate my drinks just to liven things up! Thanks for sharing.

Such an awesome way to start the morning. So nourishing. I do the ACV mixture often and add lemon when I have some on hand.

These things are all so good for you! It’s great that you mix them together daily and drink them. I usually add them to my tea or hot toddy when I am sick, and they help SO much.

  • Reply pratb29 May 3, 2016 at 3:02 pm

So how much of this should you drink every morning? You say you can save the leftovers so is there a certain amount I should drink?

    • Alyssa Coleman
Reply Alyssa Coleman May 4, 2016 at 10:15 am

Hey PRATB29 I drink between 1/4 cup – 1/2 cup every morning. If you are just trying out ACV in the morning for the first time, I would start with 1/4 cup, and keep the leftovers in the fridge until tomorrow. Then work your way up to 1/2 cup! xo
